George Papastamatiou
Principal of Byzantine Artworks, is a master iconographer with more than fifty years of experience creating large-scale Byzantine iconography and mosaics for churches across the United States, Europe, and Australia. Born on Samos island and raised in Athens, he trained within a family of established iconographers and continued his formation under Demetrios Cafis, professor of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After founding his own studio in Athens in 1970, George expanded his work internationally, coordinating ecclesiastical projects throughout Greece, the U.S., Central and South America, and Australia. He established a permanent U.S. studio in 1984, and later relocated to Boston, while maintaining active workshops and resources in Greece.
George’s work is represented in the collections of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Vatican, and the Smithsonian Institution. His iconography has been recognized by Orthodox jurisdictions worldwide.
He has also taught hundreds of students, many of whom are now practicing iconographers. His son, Stamatis, is now the fourth generation to carry on the family tradition in producing hagiography. Today, George’s studios in Greece and the U.S. bring together trained iconographers, mosaicists and specialists capable of managing projects from concept to completion.
